Your best keyword is probably one you never wrote

One of my posts ranks #6 for "how to advertise on reddit." That search has put it in front of people 3,352 times.

The phrase "how to advertise on reddit" appears zero times in the post.

Not in the title. Not in a heading. Not once in the body.

That is not a mistake, and it is not unusual. Google stopped needing the literal words a long time ago. The page is about advertising on Reddit, Google worked that out on its own, and it ranks the page for the phrasing real people actually type.

Which raises a question worth sitting with. If you do not know which searches a post already ranks for, what exactly are you optimising when you edit it?

The data exists. It is just in the wrong place.

Search Console knows every query bringing people to every page on your site. It has known all along.

The problem is where it lives. You open Search Console in one tab, filter down to a single page, read the query list, then switch to WordPress and start editing. By the third paragraph you have forgotten four of the five phrases.

So most people skip it. They open the post, rewrite whatever feels weak, and hit update. The edit runs on instinct while the performance data sits in another tab, unopened.

That gap is the whole problem. Not a lack of data. A lack of the data being in front of you at the moment you are changing something.

What the sidebar does

SEOMedic Pro puts that query list inside the editor.

Open any post and the SEOMedic panel shows the searches that page ranks for right now, pulled from your own Search Console and Bing accounts. Each one carries its position, its impressions, and its clicks.

Here is the panel on that Reddit post:

  • how to advertise on reddit. #6, 3,352 impressions
  • how to run reddit ads. #3, 3,833 impressions, ×1 in post
  • how to make reddit ads. #50, 4 impressions
  • reddit ads tutorial. #33, 3 impressions

Real numbers, reported by Google about your page. Not a third party tool estimating your traffic from the outside.

So what does "×1 in post" mean?

That purple chip counts how many times the exact phrase appears in your post body.

"how to run reddit ads" shows ×1, so that phrase is written once somewhere in the post. The other three have no chip at all, which means they appear zero times.

A few things worth knowing about how it counts.

It runs on your live draft, so the number updates as you type. It reads body text only, so your title is not included, and neither is alt text or anything sitting inside an HTML attribute. And it matches literally. "reddit ads tutorial" does not count "a tutorial for reddit ads." Different word order, no match.

The number you should not chase

Here is where people go wrong, and I want to be blunt about it.

Seeing four phrases with no chip creates an itch. The obvious move is to work each one into the post until every row lights up purple.

Do not do that.

You already rank #6 for a phrase you never wrote once. That is the proof that Google does not need the literal string. Adding it does not tell Google anything it has not already worked out, and stacking five near identical phrases into one post reads badly to a human, which is the exact thing Google has spent a decade getting better at measuring.

The chip is context. It is not a checklist and it is not a score.

What the chip is actually telling you

The useful way to read it is not as a keyword count. It is a location marker.

Where the exact phrase appears is usually where your post answers that query directly. The sentence containing "how to run reddit ads" is almost certainly the sentence where you explain how to run Reddit ads.

So a phrase at #3 showing ×1 is telling you something specific. Your strongest query has a small footprint in this document, and you now know roughly where it lives.

That matters right before a rewrite. You tighten a clunky intro, and without noticing you compress the passage that was doing the work for your best search. Traffic slips six weeks later, by which point you have edited nine other posts and have no idea which change caused it.

Zero occurrences at a good position is the opposite situation. It means the relevance is spread across the whole page rather than concentrated in one sentence. Nothing single to break. That is a robust place to be, which is why the missing chip is not a problem to solve.

The bigger story is in the gap between the numbers

Now look at that Reddit row again. Position #3. 3,833 impressions. No clicks chip at all, which means zero clicks.

At position three you would normally expect something like eight to twelve percent of those impressions to become visits. Call it three hundred people. We got none.

That gap is worth more than any keyword count on the page.

There are two explanations, and they lead to completely different work.

The first is that the snippet is not earning the click. You rank, people see you, and your title and description do not look like an answer to what they typed. That is a title tag and meta description job, and it is the fastest win available anywhere in SEO, because you are converting attention you have already paid for. Nothing about the page itself needs to change.

The second is that the click was never on offer. Reddit queries in particular now pull an AI Overview, and Reddit's own threads tend to sit above everything else. You can be position three underneath a results page that answers the question before anyone scrolls.

No title rewrite fixes that one.

Telling them apart takes about thirty seconds. Search the phrase yourself and look at what sits above you.

If it is ordinary blue links, it is your snippet, and you have a title to rewrite.

If the top of the page is an AI Overview and three Reddit threads, your #3 is worth less than it reads. The honest move there is to stop working on that query and go find one where the click still exists.

What to do with this

Open your best performing post. Not the newest one. The one that already gets traffic.

Read across each row rather than down the list. Position, impressions, clicks. The rows worth your time are the ones where those three numbers disagree with each other.

High impressions and no clicks is a snippet problem or a SERP problem, and thirty seconds of searching tells you which.

A strong position with a single occurrence is a note to yourself. Know where that sentence is before your next rewrite.

And a strong position with no occurrence at all is the one to leave completely alone. That is Google telling you it understood the page.

The panel carries more than ranked queries. There is focus keyword, LSI suggestions, keyword density, suggested internal links, readability, and your heading outline. Ranked queries is the one I would open first, because it is the only one showing you what is already true rather than what might help.

Ranked queries needs SEOMedic Pro with a connected Search Console or Bing account.
